Today I went to buy a new desk lamp. The old €10 Ikea halogen spot has given in after more than 10 years of use, and we've been without a desk lamp for a couple of weeks already which lead to all kinds of bitching and moaning in the house because there's only one other reading lamp which was transported from corner to corner. Those days are over now. At first, I thought I'd have to take another bus trip to IKEA next week, since neither Blokker nor HEMA or Vroom and Dreesman had any. Okay, V&D had one desk lamp, and it came at €99. What do they think people are looking for in their furniture department - those cheap little plastic bathroom baskets of which they have shelves and shelves full? Or the bazillion of candle holders which clog their furniture department? At de Bijenkorf, Rotterdam's upper-class department store, prices started at €120 and went up to more than €500. And who's going to pay my rent? But then, there was this one model which was on sale: It's shiny and flexible, has a long neck and a sturdy foot, so I bought it and strapped it on my bike (which wasn't that easy, considering that it came in a package which was twice the size necessary) and rode home with it. I assembled it on the kitchen table, but didn't have a light bulb of the right size and wattage, so I had to go back to Albert Heijn and buy one, together with a fish for tonight and strawberry cheesecake ice cream. And then I had to take my gabimatic in it. At the same time, I was reading my RSS feed with tons of new Spock-is-not-impressed* photos, so I tweaked it in the same vein.
*Spock is not impressed is a Tumblr blog run by Sean Bonner, and it's the latest Internet meme. If you have good ideas for it (that do NOT include self portraits), submit them here. My personal favorite so far is this (even though I am usually not a fan of hate animated GIFs):
